WebSolutionStuff | Mar-02-2022 | Categories : Laravel PHP

In this article, we will show you laravel 9 user role and permission with an example. here we will see how to set user role and permission in laravel 9. we are using spatie GitHub package for roles and permissions in laravel 9 application. Spatie role permission composer package provides a way to create ACL in laravel 9. Also, this package allows you to manage user permissions and roles in a database.

GitHub spatie/laravel-permission package.

So, let's see roles and permissions in laravel 9, laravel 9 spatie roles and permissions tutorial, laravel 9 user role and permission tutorial, spatie/laravel-permission example.

Step 1 : Install Laravel 9 for user role and permission example

Step 2 : Create Authentication using Laravel 9

Step 3 : Install Composer Packages spatie/laravel-permission

Step 4 : Create Product Migration

Step 5 : Create Models

Step 6 : Add Middleware

Step 7 : Create Routes

Step 8 : Add Controllers

Step 9 : Create Blade File

Step 10 : Create Seeder For Permissions and AdminUser

Step 1 : Install Laravel 9 for user role and permission example

First of we will create a new laravel 9 application using the below command.

composer create-project --prefer-dist laravel/laravel blog

Step 2 : Create Authentication in Laravel 9

Now, we need to generate auth scaffolding in laravel 9 using the laravel UI command.

composer require laravel/ui

Install bootstrap auth using the below command.

php artisan ui bootstrap --auth

Now, install npm and run dev for better UI results.

npm install
npm run dev

Step 3 : Install Composer Packages

Now, we will install spatie package for ACL.

composer require spatie/laravel-permission

Also, install the form collection package using the below command.

composer require laravelcollective/html

Optional: The service provider will automatically get registered. Or you may manually add the service provider in your config/app.php file.

'providers' => [
	....
	Spatie\Permission\PermissionServiceProvider::class,
],

Now, publish this package as below.

php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Spatie\Permission\PermissionServiceProvider"

Now you can see permission.php file and one migrations. So, we need to run migration using the following command.

php artisan migrate

Step 4 : Create Product Migration

In this step, Create migration for the products table.

php artisan make:migration create_products_table

Edit products table as the below.

<?php

use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Schema;
use Illuminate\Database\Schema\Blueprint;
use Illuminate\Database\Migrations\Migration;

class CreateProductsTable extends Migration
{
    public function up()
    {
        Schema::create('products', function (Blueprint $table) {
            $table->id();
            $table->string('name');
            $table->text('detail');
            $table->timestamps();
        });
    }

    public function down()
    {
        Schema::dropIfExists('products');
    }
}

After that migrate the table using the below command.

php artisan migrate

Step 5 : Create Models

Now, create app/Models/User.php

<?php

namespace App\Models;

use Illuminate\Contracts\Auth\MustVerifyEmail;
use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Factories\HasFactory;
use Illuminate\Foundation\Auth\User as Authenticatable;
use Illuminate\Notifications\Notifiable;
use Spatie\Permission\Traits\HasRoles;

class User extends Authenticatable
{
    use HasFactory, Notifiable, HasRoles;

    protected $fillable = [
        'name',
        'email',
        'password',
    ];

    protected $hidden = [
        'password',
        'remember_token',
    ];

    protected $casts = [
        'email_verified_at' => 'datetime',
    ];
}

After that create app/Models/Product.php

<?php

namespace App\Models;

use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Factories\HasFactory;
use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Model;

class Product extends Model
{
    use HasFactory;

    protected $fillable = [
        'name', 'detail'
    ];
}

Step 6 : Add Middleware

Spatie package provide it's in-built middleware, add middleware in Kernel.php file

protected $routeMiddleware = [
    ....
    'role' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\RoleMiddleware::class,
    'permission' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\PermissionMiddleware::class,
    'role_or_permission' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\RoleOrPermissionMiddleware::class,
]

Step 7 : Create Routes

Now, add code in the routes/web.php file.

<?php

use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Route;

use App\Http\Controllers\HomeController;
use App\Http\Controllers\RoleController;
use App\Http\Controllers\UserController;
use App\Http\Controllers\ProductController;

Route::get('/', function () {
    return view('welcome');
});

Auth::routes();

Route::get('/home', [HomeController::class, 'index'])->name('home');

Route::group(['middleware' => ['auth']], function() {
    Route::resource('roles', RoleController::class);
    Route::resource('users', UserController::class);
    Route::resource('products', ProductController::class);
});

Step 8 : Add Controllers

Now create a controller and add the below code in the controller.

1. app/Http/Controllers/UserController.php

<?php

namespace App\Http\Controllers;

use Illuminate\Http\Request;
use App\Http\Controllers\Controller;
use App\Models\User;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Role;
use DB;
use Hash;
use Illuminate\Support\Arr;

class UserController extends Controller
{
    /**
     * Display a listing of the resource.
     *
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function index(Request $request)
    {
        $data = User::orderBy('id','DESC')->paginate(5);
        return view('users.index',compact('data'))
            ->with('i', ($request->input('page', 1) - 1) * 5);
    }

    /**
     * Show the form for creating a new resource.
     *
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function create()
    {
        $roles = Role::pluck('name','name')->all();
        return view('users.create',compact('roles'));
    }

    /**
     * Store a newly created resource in storage.
     *
     * @param  \Illuminate\Http\Request  $request
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function store(Request $request)
    {
        $this->validate($request, [
            'name' => 'required',
            'email' => 'required|email|unique:users,email',
            'password' => 'required|same:confirm-password',
            'roles' => 'required'
        ]);

        $input = $request->all();
        $input['password'] = Hash::make($input['password']);

        $user = User::create($input);
        $user->assignRole($request->input('roles'));

        return redirect()->route('users.index')
                        ->with('success','User created successfully');
    }

    /**
     * Display the specified resource.
     *
     * @param  int  $id
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function show($id)
    {
        $user = User::find($id);
        return view('users.show',compact('user'));
    }

    /**
     * Show the form for editing the specified resource.
     *
     * @param  int  $id
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function edit($id)
    {
        $user = User::find($id);
        $roles = Role::pluck('name','name')->all();
        $userRole = $user->roles->pluck('name','name')->all();

        return view('users.edit',compact('user','roles','userRole'));
    }

    /**

     */
    public function update(Request $request, $id)
    {
        $this->validate($request, [
            'name' => 'required',
            'email' => 'required|email|unique:users,email,'.$id,
            'password' => 'same:confirm-password',
            'roles' => 'required'
        ]);

        $input = $request->all();
        if(!empty($input['password'])){
            $input['password'] = Hash::make($input['password']);
        }else{
            $input = Arr::except($input,array('password'));
        }

        $user = User::find($id);
        $user->update($input);
        DB::table('model_has_roles')->where('model_id',$id)->delete();

        $user->assignRole($request->input('roles'));

        return redirect()->route('users.index')
                        ->with('success','User updated successfully');
    }

        return redirect()->route('users.index')
                        ->with('success','User deleted successfully');
    }
}

Step 9 : Create Blade File

1. For theme layout we will create an app.blade.php file

2. For the Users Module we will create index.blade.php, create.blade.php, edit.blade.php, show.blade.php file

3. For the Roles Module we will create index.blade.php, create.blade.php, edit.blade.php, show.blade.php file

4. For the Product Module we will create index.blade.php, create.blade.php, edit.blade.php, show.blade.php file

Step 10: Create Seeder For Permissions and AdminUser

Now, we will add seeder for permission

1. role-list

2. role-create

3. role-edit

4. role-delete

5. product-list

6. product-create

7. product-edit

8. product-delete

Now, run the below command

php artisan make:seeder PermissionTableSeeder

Now, copy code in this database/seeds/PermissionTableSeeder.php file as below.

<?php

namespace Database\Seeders;

use Illuminate\Database\Seeder;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Permission;

class PermissionTableSeeder extends Seeder
{
    /**
     * Run the database seeds.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function run()
    {
        $permissions = [
           'role-list',
           'role-create',
           'role-edit',
           'role-delete',
           'product-list',
           'product-create',
           'product-edit',
           'product-delete'
        ];

        foreach ($permissions as $permission) {
             Permission::create(['name' => $permission]);
        }
    }
}

Now, run the below command in your terminal

php artisan db:seed --class=PermissionTableSeeder

Now, create a new seeder for creating admin users.

php artisan make:seeder CreateAdminUserSeeder

Now, copy the below code database/seeds/CreateAdminUserSeeder.php in this file.

<?php

namespace Database\Seeders;

use Illuminate\Database\Seeder;
use App\Models\User;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Role;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Permission;

class CreateAdminUserSeeder extends Seeder
{
    /**
     * Run the database seeds.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function run()
    {
        $user = User::create([
            'name' => 'websolutionstuff',
            'email' => '[email protected]',
            'password' => bcrypt('12345678')
        ]);

        $role = Role::create(['name' => 'Admin']);

        $permissions = Permission::pluck('id','id')->all();

        $role->syncPermissions($permissions);

        $user->assignRole([$role->id]);
    }
}

Run the below command in your terminal.

php artisan db:seed --class=CreateAdminUserSeeder
